I originally purchased this book back in 2015. This is my second time reading it. Although there is a good bit of advice that, I believe, is by now common knowledge within the indie community — the necessity of a mailing list, for example — I always enjoy a good refresher.I'm not a "strict" historical fiction writer, but more an historical fantasy fiction writer, thus my interest in this book. More specifically, I enjoy reading and writing gaslamp fantasy, weird westerns, streampunk (although this is SF not fantasy), and some unclassifiable fantasy. But most of what I write is placed in history about 150 years ago (I've been working on a US Civil War fantasy).Hawker's metaphor of a "three-horse hitch" I found useful even for historical fantasy. In fact, I think it would apply to any genre, if the astute reader can look beyond the HF specifics and garner the principles that will apply elsewhere. It is here, though, that I do take some exception to what she's said. Here's my exception: series. The appeal of writing a series is understandable. It means less work, especially in terms of worldbuilding for future novels in the series. However, I do *not* believe that a series is necessary for success. I can name loads of traditionally published authors who have been incredibly successful *without* writing a series (Stephen King tops that list, as most of his novels are stand-alones, but there are others). Thankfully, Hawker at least does give homage to this fact when she writes, "If you can't muster the enthusiasm for a true series that follows the same characters or focuses on one historic event, plan instead to write several *unified stand-alone* novels" [emphasis in original].My point here is that what sells the next book is not that it's a sequel to the previous book, but that the previous book was good and had a good, satisfying ending. The problem with a series is the danger of writing a story *without* a real ending. I keep running into series where none of the stories can even stand alone, let alone whether or not the ending is satisfying.Hawker's chapter on research was good, especially with her warnings on how too many let their obsession with historical facts overwhelm their focus on writing a good story. I like how Hannah Kohler summed up a good strategy for researching historical fiction, which mirrors Hawker's advice. Kohler wrote, "Don't start with the research. Establish your characters and narrative, and then be strategic about what you need to find out. Research as you write." That's an excellent summary of Hawker's advice. I have only recently decided to focus on writing HF so was looking for a book to help me become acquainted with the genre.I loved Libbie Hawker's book. Not only is it very clearly written with tons of HF examples, the helpfulness of this author for fellow-writers permeates every page. This is very encouraging when you are just taking your first steps in the genre; it makes you feel respected and understood. I will follow all the advice given and - although the book was published 4 years ago - I believe the advice is still valid. I just couldn't find M.K. Tod's survey after 2015?I intend to self-publish my first Historical Fiction Series so I found the information for Indies helpful and to make sure I will do all of the marketing stuff in the right! Also to connect with other HF writers and to deliver superb writing, which is well-researched.I found the three-horse hitch very insightful (appeal, series, packaging) and will pay equal attention to all three.Thank you, Libbie, for giving me such a solid start in the genre.
